Mold & Air Duct FAQs

Click the plus (+) sign to expand and see the answer to some of our most frequently asked questions.

Why Choose Mold and Air Duct Pros? Or Are all mold removal companies pretty much the same?

When you are dealing with mold issues in your home, it is imperative to choose the right mold removal company in order to protect your home and the health of the occupants. Please ensure the contractor you choose is top rated, follows industry standards and charges fair prices. By asking 4 simple questions, you will be able to choose the right company.

Does your company offer free and fair estimates?

We know finding out your home may have mold can be a scary thing. At Mold and Air Duct Pros we can help you determine if you really have the mold problem, and help you with the next steps. We will provide you with a free 15-minute consultation over the phone, as well as a free estimate in person.

Everyone likes to get great value for their money. At MADP we get that and we work hard to make sure we constantly invest into the best training, supplies, and equipment so we can be more efficient, and be able to pass those savings on to our clients.

Does your company carry pollution insurance?

Basic liability insurance doesn’t cover mold projects. Some contractors may avoid getting Pollution Insurance coverage because it is expensive. If your mold company doesn’t have the proper coverage, it could have detrimental consequences in case of an unfortunate event. For example, imagine your contractor didn’t set up the proper containment of the remediation area, and spread mold spores all throughout the house. Unfortunately this does happen and could be a very costly mistake leaving the homeowner in a vulnerable position!

The second question to ask is if they will test the air for mold spores in the entire house?

Because mold spores are not visible to the “naked” eye, travel through buildings with the air flow, and can grow behind the walls and inside the air ducts, it’s important to analyze the air you breathe in each room, and not just where the mold growth is visible.

Mold & Air Duct pros use InstaScope, the only technology of its kind on the market, to analyze your airborne mold spores count instantly and generate reports on-site! No more waiting!

If you had mold remediation completed, how can you be sure that it was done properly, and the airborne mold count is below the safe levels? We perform post-remediation air testing after each project to confirm that the mold problem has been properly addressed, and provide you with the test results for your records.

Does your company offer 100% service guarantee?

Mold & Air Duct Pros takes our 100% service guarantee very seriously, and you can have confidence that we will stand by our customer AND we will make it right! Our guarantee is in place to give you the ultimate peace-of-mind when selecting a mold removal contractor. This makes Mold & Air Duct Pros the easy choice to eliminate the mold hazard in your property.

How To Avoid Duct Cleaning Scams

Don’t be a victim to the “whole house special for $99-$249” ads. Unfortunately some companies use these misleading tactics to get “foot in your door”. Once they arrive and do their “inspection”, the up-charging begins. They will start asking you if you would like to add return lines, furnace blower, etc., up-charging you for all these “add-ons”, and leaving you with a much larger bill to pay.

Check if the company is a NADCA certified member here NADCA How to Find A Mold & Air Duct Professional .  NADCA certified companies are required to follow NADCA duct cleaning process, which requires to clean the full system-furnace, ducts, returns, and registers. Please refer to The Homeowner’s Guide Why Choose a NADCA Member NADCA Homeowners Guide PDF

Lastly, we highly recommend hiring a company that uses a negative air machine/process. You won’t get the same results with a company that uses a “Rotobrush” or “Ram Air” cleaning your system because these type of machines don’t have enough suction power to remove the debris from the ducts, and end up leaving most of it inside your ducts.

What is mold and why does it matter?
  • Mold is a fungus that includes thousands of different species. It may grow indoors or outdoors and thrives in damp, warm, and humid environments.
  • Mold can develop by various water infiltrations such as pipe leaks or water back up. It can enter your home through open doorways, windows, and vents. It may also become attached to clothing, shoes, and pets and therefore be carried indoors. If the humidity level is over 60%, the airborne mold spores can start to multiply.
  • Attics, crawlspaces, and basements are typical areas prone to mold growth due to humidity and ventilation issues, however, any moist area in the home can get moldy. Drywall, ceiling tiles, carpets, furniture, ductwork, roofing, paneling, wallpaper, under sinks, and the areas around plumbing pipes are common areas that can harbor mold if the ideal growing conditions are present.
  • Mold matters because it affects our health negatively if not dealt with properly. That’s why it’s important to stay on top of any potential mold issues and have professionals remediate them and make sure they don’t come back.
  • If  you smell a “musty odor”, you are probably smelling mycotoxins. Some mold types are capable of producing mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are a defensive chemical that the mold produces to ward off other varieties of mold. Mycotoxins are generally what adversely affects people’s health.
  • If you suspect  you may have mold in your home, and  are experiencing any allergic reactions such as runny nose, itchy throat, and even headaches, please call Mold And Air Duct Pros at (440) 249-4779. We pride ourselves on fast, safe, and affordable mold inspection service and are able to perform mold test on site with instant results, to give you a peace of mind that your home or office is a safe environment, as well as  help you fix any air quality issues that are present.
What does mold mean for me and my health?

There are over 100,000 mold species, and each person’s body may react differently to each mold type. The elderly, infants, young children, individuals with immune suppression, or those with underlying lung diseases may be more sensitive to the mold exposure and may experience more severe symptoms.

Most common mold related symptoms are nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye or skin irritation, headaches, lack of mental clarity or, in more severe cases, fever and difficulty breathing.

Allergic reactions may happen immediately or develop after a period following exposure. Both growing mold and even dead mold spores may lead to allergic reactions, that’s why we have to HEPA vacuum each square inch of the contaminated area after the treatments to remove the dead mold spores..

Mold has been known to cause asthma attacks in people who have asthma and are allergic to mold.

Why do I need to have my home/business tested?

A common question we get is why do I need to have my home or business tested for mold? We know that mold is naturally occurring, it’s safe to say that all buildings are at least in some way or another sheltering mold spores. So why even bother with a test? What will a test tell me if I know the spores exist in my building to begin with? Mold spores thrive and have the potential of developing into a network of microbiological ecologies when the conditions are right. The perfect conditions for mold growth potential include: the presence of moisture, improper ventilation, and/or a mold containing source causing cross-contamination. For our testing we use the InstaScope, we call it Lab On Wheels. It is able to test numerous rooms and spaces per session, and provide us with instant results. So this testing will accomplish 2 things: expose elevated mold levels issues that need to be addressed for the safety of your home and occupants, or show that your home has safe mold levels and give you the peace of mind you are looking for.

What is your process for mold inspection and testing?

Mold & Air Duct Pros has established a mold inspection and testing process to help ensure a consistent experience for all of our customers. Our process is as follows:

  1. First we will start with an Initial Phone consultation. This will help us understand your unique situation and a plan to move forward with helping you.
  2. Next is the onsite Interview. One of our team members will come to your location to gather more detailed information on occupants and property history.
  3. Third is the Interior and Exterior Inspection. With this inspection we can identify moisture related issues using the latest and best equipment to scan the walls and environment for problem areas.
  4. In addition to scanning for moisture problems we will do an On-Site Air Sampling and Analysis. This gives instant results and clarity using today’s most advanced mold testing equipment.
  5. Then we will take the analysis and process it to give you an easy-to-read online Mold Assessment Report provided within 24 hours. Gone are the days of sending in samples to labs to process this information.
  6. Lastly, if abnormal mold levels are found, we will provide you with a remediation estimate and if you decide to work our our team, we will implement our Mold remediation process to restore your work or home environment to being a safe and healthy place co-workers and loved ones.

What is the process for mold remediation?

At Mold & Air Duct Pros have developed and perfected the following mold remediation system to deliver quality results at an affordable price.

  1. It all starts with a free phone conversation to better understand your building, occupants, and the extent of the mold problem.

  2. Next we move into the inspection phase. Mold can be visible, it can also be airborne. Upon approval, we will conduct a thorough mold air analysis with instant results in every room using InstaScope. Upon completion, we will share the results along with a safe & effective mold remediation plan.

  3. Our team always respects your home or business, covering your floors & belongings, keeping them safe and clean during your mold remediation.

  4. If we notice any areas with high mold counts and visible growth. We will contain them to prevent the mold from spreading to other areas of the building.

  5. We then use HEPA air filtration devices to capture unwanted airborne particulates, keeping the air quality in your home safe and clean during your remediation.

  6. Next we do any necessary DEMOLITION & REMOVAL. Many times this is not needed, but in some circumstances we perform controlled demolition and removal of contaminated building materials from your property.

  7. The next step is using a HEPA Vacuume. All contaminated surfaces such as walls, ceilings & floors will be HEPA vacuumed then wiped down with an EPA-approved broad-spectrum disinfectant. This ensures that the mold spores on the surface are fully removed.

  8. After we clean the surface, then we use a professional grade system that uses the power of reacted chemistry to cause the contaminants to be driven to the surface. This eliminates any contamination that is not visible.

  9. We then use a WET VACUUM EXTRACTION process to  clean the resultant foam produced by the reacted chemistry step.

  10. Lastly we do a POST-REMEDIATION EVALUATION –This is the final step and is performed in the contaminated areas to verify that the mold remediation was successful.
I think my home has mold, do I need to call a removal company?

If you suspect mold in your home, it’s crucial to address it swiftly due to potential health risks, especially for children, those with immune suppression, or underlying lung diseases. Mold isn’t always visible and can hide behind walls, under floors, or in ceilings — making it challenging to detect without professional help. For any visible mold in a small area, you might manage cleaning it yourself with proper safety gear. However, considering the health implications and the possibility of hidden mold, it’s wise to consult a professional mold inspection company. They can accurately assess the situation, find hidden mold, and determine the extent of the infestation. We specialize in both mold inspection and remediation. We can help you identify mold issues, safely remove them, and take measures to prevent future growth. By addressing both visible and hidden mold, we ensure your home is safe and healthy, mitigating any risks associated with mold exposure.

Is it safe to stay home while my home is being treated for mold?

Most of the time it would be safe to stay in your home as long as the occupants and pets can stay away from the contained areas of the house. We take every precaution, including setting up containment using negative air filtration devices to make sure that all the mold spores are contained in the work area. There may be times when you’ll need to leave your home for 24 hours if we need to fumigate, or there is no way for the occupants to stay outside of the contained areas.

Why is your estimate higher or lower than your competitor?

This is a fair question! Mold and Indoor Air Quality industry can be complicated, and we don’t expect our clients to know all the intricate details and industry standards.

There are mold contractors that don’t carry the pollution coverage, don’t perform mold testing of the entire structure, don’t include duct cleaning as part of the remediation process, don’t HEPA vacuum every square inch of the contaminated areas, and don’t perform post-remediation testing to verify that the mold remediation was successful. Some are just spraying some “magic chemical” to remove mold stains, and still leave all the mold spores in the house. These type of companies skip all the needed steps required for safe and effective mold removal. So it makes sense their estimates would be way lower.

On the other hand there are companies that use outdated techniques, and sometimes perform unneeded demolition which makes the price of the remediation astronomical.

Mold And Air Duct Pros has developed our process which is safe, efficient, and affordable. We focus on bringing you value, that’s where you get the best service at an affordable price!
